Passhon Tate is a rap artist, multi-business owner of the Loaded Potato Bar ATL, and mompenuer. Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, she moved to Atlanta over ten years ago and recently started her restaurant business during the height of the pandemic. She’s always been passionate about my music, so I incorporated It with the two things I love to do music and cooking. That’s how I created the only hip-hop-themed potato bar.
Passhon Tate, Owner of the Loaded Potato Bar ATL
How did you get started in your industry?
As a kid, I cooked all types of potatoes, and I enjoyed cooking at a young age. Where I am from, everyone enjoyed potatoes. As far as my music career, I’ve been rapping since I was a teenager. Honestly, my childhood/teen passions followed me and helped build such successful careers today.
Growing up, did you imagine being an entrepreneur?
Yes, always! I manifested It, and I never wanted to work a regular job. I got my degree in accounting, worked for a while, and realized counting other people’s money wasn’t for me; I wanted to count my own money. My best friends always called me lazy for not working a regular job. I’m not regular, and they know that; that’s why they would always joke about It; I knew I was going to be rich and make my own money someday.
In the beginning stages of developing your brand/business, what was your biggest struggle and how did you overcome it?
The biggest struggle was the pandemic. Also, staffing, I maintained running a successful business and carrying the struggles gracefully through it all.
Do you feel like you are pursuing purpose? If so, how did you know this was your purpose?
Yes, absolutely. As previously mentioned, even with the pandemic and employees quitting, god always guided me and held everything into place.
Please tell us about Loaded Potato Bar ATL?
We offer loaded potatoes made with passion, named after some of your favorite hip-hop artists. My biggest goal when developing the restaurant was to incorporate a hip-hop atmosphere to highlight the culture.
What is the best part of the business? What keeps you motivated to keep going?
Our customers and the feedback we get, the excitement about the food, and the love for our hip-hop-themed. It feels good to provide for the culture and give them two things they love food and music.
As an entrepreneur myself, I understand that sometimes personal life can get in the way of business. Have you encountered any personal hurdles that could have or did result in a business pivot?
Yes, of course. Business is hard and you pivot day too, day. But I haven’t experienced anything traumatic to the point It could potentially stop me and I have to pivot.
During these times, we’ve all had to adjust. How was this adjustment been for you and your brand?
With the pandemic, many people were out of jobs or didn’t have different streams of income. As a mom, my responsibility is to build a strong legacy and foundation, creating multiple streams and generational wealth. That motivated me to increase my drive and keep pushing to pursue all of my dreams.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Don’t stop and always believe in yourself despite adversity.
Lastly, what keeps you strutting?
My kids, I do It all for them.
